Setting Up Proxy With No Root

If you want to surf the web with a proxy on Android and can't/don't want to root your device then Opera Mobile is the solution.

If Opera Mobile is not installed on your phone then go get a copy from the Android Market:



If you don't have Internet access on your phone, then download a copy from Opera's website then transfer and install it to your phone:

Once you have connected to the Wi-Fi network with the proxy and have Opera Mobile running:

1. Type opera:config into the address bar then enter


2. Scroll down the page until you get to Proxy and click it to display the settings


3. Now Scroll down again until you get to HTTP server and HTTPS server and in these two fields type your proxy information in the format address:port (e.g. my.proxy.com:3128)


4. Scroll down more until you get to Use HTTP and Use HTTPS and tick both boxes then click on save lower down


5. Now close the window and go to any site and the proxy should be working on Opera Mobile, and if your proxy server needs a username and password a popup will tell you to enter them in after you try going to any site

    Thats good to know that it helped.
    I've been looking for a while, but this is the only option I have found for people with no root. If you want all the apps to work then you have to root.

    Using a browser to access wifi with proxy can be done with both Opera and Firefox but Firefox is still new and has too many bugs and lags a lot. Opera is the better choice.

    As of Froyo 2.2, Google has not yet added the proxy settings for the wifi configuration. Let's hope they add this with Gingerbread.

    For now, there is no way you can enable a proxy setting for all the applications of the phone without rooting. We have to deal with just a browser for now.

    I didn't see the Step 5 (Username,password)window.
    I type the proxy information in the format address:port (xx1proxy:8080).
    And Step 4 is same as yours.
    I didn't know where the error seeting?

    For those of you who need to use a SOCKS proxy (for example, one created as part of an SSH Tunnel using ConnectBot, etc.), Firefox Beta Mobile with the "Proxy Settings" addon will work. Without rooting your phone.

    So on mine the settings for the actual address won't save. It is for a university connection: uct.ac.za/cache.pac, and it somehow deletes the "/" and won't connect. I have no idea what to do about it...

    al settings described above works fine on my LG optimus Black with Android Version: 2.2.2.

    But after saving the settings in OPERA I will not receive the pop up window for username and password?

    I receive only an error message with title: The server rquires a not supported authentification method.

      I use the same phone with the same android version on a SpeakOut network and this is the only way I've found so far through which can browse the web for now, without rooting.

    hey oman guy,you can try to set the proxy setting on ur s2 galaxy.or you can root your phone and install a " auto proxy" from android market,but still need work to do,that is finding a working proxy.you can search it via google.- olyd sabahans wrote:

    Hy, I wanted to use the automatic proxy configuration url to access some sites by the proxy of my university (Brazil), but the version i have downloaded (11.5) don't have this choice to put the proxy url of the university. I have seen that in the version you have shown this option apears as the first topic of the proxy configuration. But i can't download this version to my device. Is there something i can do?

      I set up cntlm on a linux box and allowed certail hosts without authentication then configured my phone to use it as the proxy. Works like charm.

    you can insert proxy settings in wifi settings which will work for all applications.
    go to wifi, long press on connection, modify network, tick advance options and add proxy. in Android 4, ICS

    i bought a bq kepler 2 cheap but messy both with edges finger pointing and video rotation issues 5-point finger wow, had to get a true feeling on ics, so had to change keybs to do the opera thing 4 days. Need to try it if works, it's for univ. Wish a global proxy NOROOT needed. Thank you, Let's see what happens

    This worked for me on an android galaxy s2 for uniwireless at unimelb. took some time to realise that I had to add the port number after a colon after the manual proxy address, but now works fine. Thanks Opera mobile.
